The farmstead of Penarth Ganol (which means
“ The middle farm at the top of the hill”) lies
in the pretty valley of the River Cothi on the edge of the
Cambrian Mountains, with stunning views towards the Brecon
Beacons. The traditional stone and slate buildings are all
Grade II listed and date from about 1780. They have remained
unchanged over the years except for the addition of a few
modern comforts. There is a two-seater loo in the privy in
the back garden but we have not had to use it, yet!
When we bought Penarth Ganol in June 2001
we especially liked the fact that it had not been modernised
or otherwise spoiled. We have tried to retain the best of
the past, with a few additions of our own. We offer our guests
the comfort of central heating, a cosy AGA in the farmhouse
kitchen, a woodburner in the living room if the evenings are
chilly and comfortable bedrooms with stunning views across
the valley.
We offer traditional bed and breakfast,
with a full Welsh breakfast in the farmhouse kitchen, (with
our own free range eggs), but lesser options are available!
Packed lunches can be provided to suit your needs and we can
recommend a number of very good local eating-places.
We have two rooms available for B &
B. The "Yellow" room has a double bed, with a wash
basin in the room and an adjacent private bathroom with bath.
the larger "Blue" family room has a king sized bed
plus a single bed, with a private adjacent bathroom with bath
and shower. A child's cot is available.
We can also offer a well appointed static
caravan, furnished to sleep 4/7, set in its own little garden
with lovely views over the Cothi valley. rates on application.
The farm can provide an ideal centre for
anyone wishing to explore the Brecon Beacons National Park,
the Cambrian Mountains and Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion Coasts.
Local attractions include many Steam Railways, Mining Museums,
Woollen Mills, National Trust Properties, Castles, Antique
Markets, Gardens and Wild Life Reserves – the possibilities
are endless with something for everyone.
Guests are welcome to walk around the 57-acre
farm, which offers a range of habitats and wild life. Red
kites, buzzards and ravens nest in the vicinity and are regular
visitors. We have counted over 40 other species of birds here.
In 2002 a pair of canada geese nested on the island in our
pond. Thay have returned every year since with their babies.
Our private pond is stocked with rainbow
trout for keen anglers and there is local game, fly and specimen
fishing.
We have a flock of around 50 sheep, including
coloured and rare-breeds based on Black Leicester Longwool,
Wensleydale, Jacob and others. From these we produce lamb,
sheepskins, and garments hand made from their coloured wool
which are sold at local Farmers’ Markets and Craft Fairs.
Lambing usually takes place from February through to the end
of April.
Our horses include a very rare stallion
of the Akhal-Teke breed from Turkmenistan, with a number of
mares. Each summer we will breed one or two foals from our
brood mares. Stabling and grazing are available if guests
wish to bring their own horses for wonderful riding in Caio
and Brechfa Forests or for local endurance rides and there
is an excellent trekking centre just across the valley.
